Peter Fantke is CEO at substitute ApS, a small-medium enterprise focusing on developing and implementing methods for chemical substitution, safe and sustainable-by-design, life cycle assessment, and risk screening. Peter is also Adjunct Professor & RobustNature Fellow at the Department for Evolutionary Ecology and Environmental Toxicology, Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany, and he is Extraordinary Professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of South Africa, South Africa.
Peter's research focuses on developing data, methods and tools for assessing emissions, fate, exposure and toxicity effects of chemicals, materials and products along the entire life cycle. His research is applied in life cycle assessment and chemical footprinting, in chemical substitution and alternatives assessment, Safe and Sustainable-by-Design, external cost analysis, and in risk screening and prioritization. He is leading global consensus-building efforts under the UNEP Life Cycle Initiative, and provides methods and training for various stakeholders, including OECD, the European Commission, national authorities from the U.S. to Thailand, companies and NGOs, and academics.
